Eliminates Idling

A sleeper cab is a driver’s bedroom. Heat, cooling, and power for mandated 10-hour rest breaks have to come from somewhere. For most trucks, that means running a diesel engine built to pull 80,000 pounds, idling all night just to keep the cab livable for one person trying to sleep.

An idling truck gets zero miles per gallon. Every hour parked with the engine running burns roughly a gallon of diesel and adds engine wear. Across a fleet, that’s $7K to $15K or more per truck, per year, spent going nowhere. Run your own numbers and see what your fleet’s idle hours are actually costing.

Auxiliary power units take over while the truck is parked, but they carry their own compromises. Diesel APUs are small engines with fuel and maintenance costs of their own. Legacy electric APUs fade before mandated rest periods end. That’s idle reduction, not idle elimination.

An idling engine means noise, vibration, and fumes all night. FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study found 13% of commercial drivers were fatigued at the time of their crash, and poor sleep quality from a noisy, vibrating engine or an uncomfortable cab is a frequent cause.
