Companies to pursue military applications of IdleX technology originally designed for commercial trucking

WAUKESHA, Wis. — IdleX, whose next-generation power systems eliminate diesel idling in semi-trucks, is entering the defense market as an exclusive technology partner of Paligen Technologies, a defense manufacturer whose expertise includes unmanned systems engineering. 

The companies will jointly pursue defense applications of IdleX’s technology, originally developed for the commercial trucking industry. This collaboration will enable reliable silent watch technology in military vehicles and introduce new recharging capabilities onboard vehicle platforms for unmanned aerial, undersea, and ground systems. 

As modern military operations continue to evolve, dependable, quiet, low-maintenance power solutions are becoming increasingly critical. IdleX’s electric auxiliary power unit (eAPU), currently designed for Class 8 semi-trucks, provides hours of cooling and electronics power with the engine off. The IdleX eAPU eliminates idling, cutting the fuel burn, noise, and heat signature that come with it, while powering electronics and gear. All are significant advantages in defense environments. 

The IdleX system replaces a truck’s starter and hotel batteries with a single system that’s capable of running air conditioning, cab electronics and more through the night with the engine off. Unlike other systems that require the engine to idle all night, or restart often to recharge the battery, the IdleX system eliminates idling entirely.

The defense contractor designs and operates energetics production facilities, and provides engineering services, including defense prototyping and unmanned systems work. The company currently holds a $435 million U.S. Army contract to build and operate the nation’s first new domestic TNT production facility since the 1980s. Paligen subsidiary McCormick Stevenson will integrate IdleX systems into defense platforms.

An 80,000-pound truck at highway speed holds enormous energy, but the true engine of safety is the human one. That is why the Hours of Service regulations exist, not as red tape but as a framework to protect drivers and everyone who shares the road.

These rules are the rhythm of the long haul. They dictate when a driver can move, when they must rest, and how they recover for the next trip. For years, drivers tracked them with paper logs and pencil lines.
